“We just can’t turn the corner against a good team,” coach Reyes said Tuesday after the Vulcans lost at Dixie State, 25-11, 26-24, 25-23.
Reyes said the end of the second set provided an accurate snapshot of Callie Aberle’s match. The reigning Pacific West Conference Player of the Week put down a kill to tie Game 24-24. But Stacey Witt made a service error and Aberle’s ball-handling error gave the set to the Red Storm, who are ranked ninth in the West Region.
Aberle carried the Vulcans (8-12, 7-10 PacWest) with 13 kills on .263 hitting.
“Callie’s number were good, but the little things that she needed to do she didn’t do so well,” Reyes said.
Maddie Rex smacked 12 kills with only two errors for Dixie (17-7, 14-2), which won the hitting battle .237 to .119.
The Vulcans need to win their remaining three road matches – starting Thursday at Azusa Pacific — to avoid a losing league season.
But they’ve won just one league road match this season.
“We’re just very anemic on the road,” Reyes said.
Morgan Lees added seven kills for the Vulcans.
Soccer
The Vulcans soccer teams host Chaminade on Thursday at the campus baseball field in matches that were postponed Oct. 18 because of the threat of Tropical Storm Ana.
At 12:30 p.m., the Vulcan men (6-8-2, 4-5-1 PacWest) take on a Silverswords team (4-10, 3-7) they beat 2-1 earlier this season.
At 3 p.m., the Lady Vulcans (6-6-4, 3-3-4) and Chaminade (3-6-1, 3-9-1) meet for the first time this season.
